Gerrit Thomas Rietveld
Utrecht 1888 – 1964
Architect, furniture designer
Unusual sewing table designed by Gerrit Thomas Rietveld, manufactured by Gerard vd Groenekan, Holland 1936. This sewing box comes from the interior of vd Groenekan himself. It was made of birch plywood, and birch wooden legs, red lacquered. The top is made of plexi and the handle of chrome plated metal. The door knob is made of brass. This piece was once painted red by vd Groenekan and also brand marked on the underside. This very nice piece has an amazing provenance and is very hard to find. Only produced in very small numbers and sold at Metz & Co. There is a similar model in the collection of Centraal Museum Utrecht, inventory number 28221.
Provenance: Gerard van de Groenekan 1936 to 2013.
