Gerrit Thomas Rietveld
Utrecht 1888 – 1964
Architect, furniture designer
Modernist pair of cabinets from a modular system designed by Gerrit Rietveld with help of Truus Schroder, Holland 1935. These 2 cabinets come from a set of 9 purchased by the family in 1935. Originally the cabinets had a black outside and red inside but they have been repainted (a long time ago) in fully black. You can see where there are some marks where the red original paint comes through. Though the cabinets are repainted, they have a very nice patina from age already. The cabinets have been restored and checked by Jurjen Creman and come with a restoration report.
Provenance: This pair of cabinets comes from as set of 9 purchased by H.M. de Rijk & J. Oosterhoff. They had there interior decorated by Rietveld in ca. 1935. Several letters of the correspondence of the chairs are in the Rietveld Schroder archive and so the cabinets can be dated back to 1935.
