Ultra rare sofa / daybed designed and made by Gerrit Rieveld Jr, son of Gerrit Rietveld, Holland 1955. Gerrit Rietveld had the idea of producing cheap, usable furniture on large scale. Industrial furniture, he never succeeded because he was too progressive for his era. His son Wim Rietveld did, Gerrit Jr. also wanted to design industrial furniture but he never got that far. This sofa is an own made production, a maximum of 5 sofas were made. This is only the 2nd time I see this sofa in 10 years. This sofa has a solid metal frame, black lacquered what was white before, wooden arm rests and upholstery by de Ploeg with a foam inside. The sofa can be made a daybed with 2 very simple hooks at the sides and the back rest falls back. The looks of this sofa in sleeping or seating position are really amazing. This is for sure the best work made by Gerrit Jr in the few years he was designing furniture on his own. The sofa is newly upholstered by old nearly similar fabric that was on it, Taga 05 by de Ploeg, quality fabric with an authentic look that suits the sofa.
