Pair of settees designed by Poul Kjaerholm for E Kold Christensen, Denmark 1958. The PK 31 was both a lounge chair and a modular seating element that could be joined in groups to create a variable length. Two chairs produced the two-seat sofa, PK 31/2, three chairs produced the three-seat sofa PK 31/3 and so on. This flexible system ensured harmony in seating groups combining chairs and sofas, and reflected Kjaerholm’s desire to create furniture that could be tailored to the size of the room. The chairs consisted of two steel side frames that included the front and back legs and were joined beneath the seat by a rectangular steel bar. Seat, back and the side panels were made of wooden frames covered with leather and included steel tabs screwed to the side frames.
These settees have very nice dark brown leather covers and are in impeccable pristine condition, the leather shows hardly any sign of usage, the cushions are still full and firm. Both sofa’s stamped with the E Kold Christensen stamp on the bottom of the steel bar. The frames are in amazing condition, original and still perfect! Only the bottom of the rectangular steel bar has some surface rust, if wanted we can clean and remove it but I preferred the patina on the metal cause the rest of the sofa’s look nearly as new. Spectacular set of sofa’s in museum condition.
